Mattress-size names are only the beginning of adjustable-bed planning. The base frame, retainers, upholstery and moving clearance can make the external footprint different from the nominal mattress size.

Use the specification sheet, not a memorised size chart

Australian sizing conventions are useful for a shortlist, but models and split formats vary. Obtain exact width, length, base thickness, leg height and mattress height for the product being quoted.

Nominal versus external dimensions

“Queen” may describe the mattress sleeping surface. A surround, headboard, side rail or retainer can add centimetres. Measure the complete installed configuration, especially inside an existing frame.

Understanding split sizes

A split king commonly combines two long-single-type sides, while split queen systems use two narrower mattresses to create a queen footprint. Confirm the supplier’s actual dimensions; do not assume every manufacturer divides sizes identically.

Walking clearance

Mark the bed outline with painter’s tape. Open drawers, wardrobes and doors, then walk the normal nighttime route. Where mobility equipment is used, test its turning space. A larger mattress is not useful if one side becomes inaccessible.

Final bed height

Add floor clearance or leg height, base thickness and mattress thickness. The result affects sitting and standing, bedside-table alignment and window clearance. A hi-lo bed has a range rather than one finished height.

Delivery dimensions

The assembled footprint does not describe the delivery components. Ask for the length, width, depth and weight of the largest indivisible piece. Measure lifts, landings, rails and diagonal turns.

Furniture interactions

  • Will the head section hit a windowsill or wall shelf?
  • Can a bedside drawer open while the bed is raised?
  • Does the wardrobe door clear the mattress corner?
  • Can power cables move without tension?
  • Is there space for service access?

Couples choosing queen or king

Compare personal sleeping width with room space. Split king offers more individual width; split queen may preserve a walkway. Mark both options in the room and trial the centre join.

Measurement record

Keep a diagram with every number labelled and dated. Add photos of difficult access points. Send the same record to each supplier so quotes use the same assumptions.

Before installation

Confirm the final orientation, power point, head end and furniture moves. Recheck the quoted model dimensions rather than relying on the display bed.
